This close-up of DC-3 VH-DAS taken at Eagle Farm, Brisbane on 27 June 1971 shows to advantage the additional astrodome on the side of the fuselage. This was installed for the benefit of the navigator. A similar astrodome was fitted on the starboard side. The location of the door evidently precluded locating the port astrodome in the same location as the starboard astrodome which was slightly lower. This view also shows the custom made spinners which were intended to prevent the oil in the propeller dome from sludging in the cold temperatures at high altitude. During testing, even in outside air temperatures as low as minus 50C, it was not necessary to exercise the props periodically. Photo: Ron Cuskelly (ND384)
