RUDDER SERVO

as told to Ron Cuskelly by Peter Shute

In June 1970, Hudson VH-AGS experienced an engine failure over Arnhem Land which resulted in a long single engine return to base at Katherine. The pilot was Brian Costello and having to keep constant pressure on the rudder for such a long time was beginning to take its toll on his muscles. Together, Brian and Peter came up with an elegant solution to give the pilot some relief. Peter went down into the nose compartment where he used his hands to pull on the rudder pedal so that Brian could relax for a while.
